It's Elul now, and we have the minhag to say, during Elul, the Mizmor of Tehillim, "L'Dovid."
During this Kapital, Dovid HaMelech is asking G-d to protect him from all his enemies.
But then he says something interesting:
“Achas sha'alti..."
He asks, "G-d, one thing I ask of you, is that I should be zoche to sit in your house my entire life, and to visit specifically your heichal and your house."
Many people use this pasuk to talk about spending time in the Beis HaMedrash.
And yes, there are Meforshim who do use that as an ideal.
But in reality, when you look through most of the Meforshim on the Peshat of what these words mean,
"In the Beis HaShem with the Kohanim and the Leviim sitting in this house."
Now we know that Dovid HaMalch's tafkid was primarily to fight the wars, and his son Shlomo was the one who was zoche to build the Beis HaShem.
But Dovid HaMelech is asking, in the context of this Kapital, to please HaShem, the only thing he wants....
He’s willing to fight the wars
He’s willing to do Ratzon HaShem
He’s willing to suffer...
But as long as HaShem takes care of this one thing, the ultimate goal will be to sit in the Beis HaShem.
So now, during Elul, as we are zoche to in fact visit Beis HaShem...
When we're to sit in the house of HaShem...
At least the Har Beis HaShem....
And hopefully soon, the heichal, the Beis HaMikdash, may we be zoche B'Mehara B'Yamenu Amen.
And that should be our tefillot every day.
And our avodah for Elul.
To come to Beis HaShem.
To be Doveik in HaShem.
To tap into this tremendous opportunity to visit the Har HaBayis...
May we actually be zoche to see the Beis HaMikdash, B'Mehara B'Yamenu Amen.
